This species of poison dart frogs' scientific name is Dendrobates tinctorious. Alkaloids in the amphibians' skin glands serve as a chemical defense against prediation, and allows them to be active during the day. They were name poison "dart" frogs because of their toxins are used to poison the tips of blow darts for hunting. Only 4 of the 174 species are used for this purpose so nothing is being done to save the amphibians. These species are found in the Amazon rainfroest in South America. They are primary consumers in a food chain or web.

The gorillas' scientific name is Gorilla gorilla or Gorilla beringei. The gorilla species' habitat is found in Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo. They are primary consumers. Forest fires have claimed the lives of many gorillas and thousands of gorillas due annually because the outbreak of the Ebola virus. Tourism in the Congo has declined and now less revenue is put into national parks and sanctuaries protecting gorillas. Due to large- scale deforestation for agriculture, timber, mining, and raising domestic animals habitat loss as been a large factor in their endangerment. The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), and the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) have projects for the protection and conservation of the "Great Apes" through restoration of their natural habitats.
